UNFI receives through a network of specialized facilities, not one warehouse. In California alone it lists nine distribution centers, including a dedicated Freezer-Deli facility in Stockton and a produce facility in West Sacramento. Your purchase order routes to a specific DC, and that DC sets the temperature capability, the appointment process, and the lane your freight runs.
For a natural or organic brand, UNFI is usually the first distributor and often the largest. It is the primary route into the natural channel and a major route into conventional grocery, which means the first UNFI purchase order is the one that turns a brand from a farmers market story into a supply chain. It also means UNFI's receiving discipline, appointments, routing compliance, and deductions, is the first real test most founders face.
UNFI's public locator lists nine California facilities, and they cluster into corridors that matter for lane planning:
From Valencia, the LA Basin pair and the Inland Empire pair are same-day runs, which is why Southern California reefer LTL into UNFI is one of the most common shipments we arrange. Stockton and Northern California are scheduled lanes, and the service areas page covers how we run them.
UNFI is not one warehouse. Your purchase order is routed to a specific facility, and that facility decides what temperature it can receive and which lane your freight runs.
The facility names in the public locator tell the story. A dedicated Freezer-Deli DC in Stockton and a separate Produce DC in West Sacramento mean UNFI runs specialization by product type, at least in California. A frozen line and a shelf-stable line from the same brand may route to different buildings, and a pallet of frozen product delivered to a facility that does not receive frozen is not a late delivery, it is a rejected one. The receiving DC on your PO is the fact everything else hangs on.
Temperature-controlled deliveries carry the same appointment and documentation discipline as dry freight plus a temperature record the receiver can check. The carrier needs the right equipment set to the right band, the appointment needs to be protected, and the paperwork needs to match the product, because a rejected cold load has nowhere to go while the clock runs. Our guide to refrigerated LTL for UNFI and KeHE walks through the handling side, and refrigerated LTL carriers covers how we source the capacity.
Distributor deductions trace back to a short list: missed or late appointments, pallet and label errors, paperwork that does not match the physical shipment, and routing guide violations. Each one is preventable with freight discipline, and each one is easier to prevent before the first PO than to dispute after the tenth. See what a UNFI or KeHE chargeback actually costs and how to avoid distributor deductions for the mechanics.
Trucks fail, storage fails, and loads go missing. What protects a UNFI relationship in those moments is the same in every case: the receiver's scheduling desk hears from you before the appointment is missed, not after. The no-show recovery playbook covers the first hour.
If you are shipping into UNFI for the first time, or shipping cold product into a UNFI DC and want the appointment, the carrier, and the paperwork handled by one team, tell us which DC is on your PO, or call (909) 304-1068. Fr8topia is a licensed freight broker, and UNFI deliveries are a large part of what we do.
UNFI's public locator lists nine distribution centers in California, plus Centralia and Ridgefield in Washington for the broader West. Grouped by corridor:
LA Basin
Inland Empire
Central Valley
Northern California
Two facility names carry the most information for a cold chain brand: Stockton Freezer-Deli is a dedicated frozen and deli facility, and NorCal Produce is produce-specific. Addresses are as listed on unfi.com on the verification date below and should be confirmed against the receiving DC on your purchase order.
UNFI distribution centers receive by appointment. The purchase order names the receiving facility, the routing guide sets the procedure for booking against it, and the carrier is expected to arrive inside the window with paperwork that matches the PO. Missed windows and mismatched paperwork are where most first-delivery problems start.
There are two ways freight reaches a UNFI dock. Direct delivery means your carrier runs to the DC on the PO, LTL or truckload, with the appointment booked in advance. Consolidation pools your pallets with other brands headed to the same DC, which trades some control for lower cost at small volumes; our retail consolidation programs page covers when that fits.
Temperature-controlled product adds a layer: the receiving facility has to be one that takes your temperature band, the trailer has to hold it, and the receiver may check the temperature at the dock. The facility named on your PO answers the first question, and the carrier answers the second.
It helps to know what UNFI publishes openly and what lives behind the supplier portal, because the split decides what you can plan from and what you have to request.
Public, on unfi.com: the full distribution center list with addresses, the supplier resources hub, and the path to the supplier support site.
Behind myUNFI, for onboarded suppliers: the routing guide, appointment procedures and lead times, carrier and equipment requirements, pallet configuration and labeling specifications, and the deduction and chargeback schedule.
What to expect regardless, because it is standard distributor practice: appointment-only receiving, pallet labels that scan to the purchase order, case counts that match the PO exactly, and a bill of lading that agrees with both. Treat these as the baseline and confirm the specifics in your current routing guide, since requirements change and the guide governs.
This page does not reproduce routing guide contents. If a claim here conflicts with your guide, the guide wins.
UNFI is not one building, and the closest DC is not necessarily yours. Brands shipping into UNFI for the first time tend to plan around the nearest facility. The purchase order routes to a specific DC, and in California that DC may be a specialized one: frozen and deli product has a dedicated Stockton facility, produce has its own West Sacramento facility. A pallet of frozen product tendered to a general DC that does not receive frozen is not a late delivery, it is a rejected one, with the clock running on a cold load with nowhere to go.
The second version of the same mistake is closer to home. Commerce and Santa Fe Springs are about ten miles apart, both in the LA Basin, and both easy to assume are interchangeable. They are not. Ship to the address on the PO, and confirm it with the carrier before dispatch rather than at the gate.
UNFI's public locator lists nine: Commerce and Santa Fe Springs in the LA Basin, Moreno Valley and Riverside in the Inland Empire, two facilities in Stockton including a dedicated Freezer-Deli DC, Gilroy on the Central Coast, a Produce DC in West Sacramento, and Rocklin. Which one receives your freight is set by the purchase order, not by proximity.
UNFI's locator lists a Freezer-Deli facility in Stockton, which indicates specialization by product type within the California network. Whether your frozen product routes there or to another facility is determined by your purchase order, so confirm the receiving DC before tendering rather than assuming.
Both routes exist. Direct delivery means your carrier runs to the DC on the PO with an appointment. Retail consolidation pools your pallets with other brands headed to the same distributor, which can lower cost at small volumes. Which fits depends on pallet count, cadence, and temperature, and a broker can price both.
The routing guide lives in the myUNFI supplier portal for onboarded suppliers. It typically covers appointment procedures, carrier and equipment requirements, pallet and label specifications, and the deduction schedule. It is the governing document for every delivery, and it changes, so ship from the current version.
