The natural grocery footprint in Orange County

Where the doors actually are, chain by chain. Chains listed: Sprouts, Mother's Market, Whole Foods, Gelson's.

Orange County holds the densest natural and organic grocery footprint of any single county we serve. It is also the only Southern California county with a dedicated natural-channel distribution center inside its borders.

Mother's Market & Kitchen

10 of the chain's 12 total stores sit in Orange County, making this the chain's home market: Anaheim Hills, Brea, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Dana Point, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Woods, Santa Ana and Sunset Beach.

Sprouts Farmers Market

Roughly 20 locations countywide, with two each in Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Tustin and Yorba Linda, plus single stores in Brea, Fullerton, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Irvine, La Habra, Laguna Niguel, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Orange, San Clemente and Seal Beach.

Whole Foods Market

About 8 stores, including two in Huntington Beach plus Brea, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach and Tustin.

Gelson's

Three full-service markets at Newport Beach, Dana Point and Rancho Mission Viejo, plus two ReCharge micro-market formats in Santa Ana and Costa Mesa.

Store counts reflect publicly published store-locator data and are reviewed quarterly. Fr8topia is an independent freight broker and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any retailer named here.

How freight actually moves here

Direct store delivery and distribution center routing are different freight problems. Here is which one applies.

Orange County is a mixed-routing market, and which model applies changes what your freight actually needs.

Distribution center routed. Sprouts operates a 337,000 square foot distribution center in Fullerton, opened in 2023 specifically to support Southern California store growth. Freight bound for Sprouts stores generally routes through that facility on an appointment basis rather than moving store to store. Whole Foods freight for the region routes through its Southern Pacific distribution center in Vernon, in Los Angeles County, rather than through an Orange County facility.

Direct store delivery. Mother's Market and Gelson's take a much higher share of direct store delivery, which is what makes Orange County workable for emerging brands that are not yet running full truckloads into a DC. Smaller drop sizes across multiple doors is a different freight problem than a single DC appointment, and it is the one most general brokers handle badly.

Most Orange County programs end up using both models at once. If you are shipping to Sprouts and Mother's Market in the same week, you are running a DC appointment and a multi-stop DSD route side by side.

Orange County freight FAQs

Do you deliver refrigerated freight to Orange County grocery stores?

Yes. Fr8topia is a licensed freight broker coordinating refrigerated and frozen freight into Orange County's natural and organic grocery channel through a vetted carrier network. Coverage includes more than 40 natural grocery doors across Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Anaheim and the surrounding cities.

Which Orange County retailers do you serve?

The natural and organic channel in Orange County is anchored by Mother's Market, which has 10 of its 12 stores in the county, alongside roughly 20 Sprouts Farmers Market locations, about 8 Whole Foods Market stores, and Gelson's in Newport Beach, Dana Point and Rancho Mission Viejo. Fr8topia moves brand freight into these doors on behalf of CPG shippers.

Do you deliver to the Sprouts distribution center in Fullerton?

Yes. Sprouts operates a 337,000 square foot distribution center in Fullerton that serves its Southern California stores. Freight bound for Sprouts generally routes through that facility rather than to individual stores, and we coordinate appointment-based deliveries into it.

What is the difference between direct store delivery and DC delivery in Orange County?

Direct store delivery sends freight to each individual store, which suits smaller brands and specialty retailers like Mother's Market and Gelson's. DC delivery consolidates freight to a distribution center, such as Sprouts in Fullerton or Whole Foods in Vernon, which then handles store-level distribution. Most Orange County programs use a mix of both.

How quickly can you move refrigerated freight into Orange County?

Orange County is a short regional lane from our Southern California base, which makes it one of the more flexible areas we cover for scheduling. Because appointment windows vary by retailer and by dock, contact us with your origin, temperature requirement and delivery window and we will confirm what is workable.
